{"id":17707,"date":"2021-03-10T00:43:17","date_gmt":"2021-03-10T00:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stratusnz.nz\/?p=17707"},"modified":"2021-05-14T13:31:29","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T01:31:29","slug":"dont-set-your-cash-on-fire-check-your-pir-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stratusnz.nz\/index.php\/2021\/03\/10\/dont-set-your-cash-on-fire-check-your-pir-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Set Your Cash on Fire \u2013 Check Your PIR Tax"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Have you checked your KiwiSaver tax rate recently?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>If you\u2019re on the wrong tax rate you may be overpaying or underpaying your tax.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Much like you pay tax on the wages or salary you earn; you also need to pay PIR (Prescribed Investor Rate) tax on any income you receive from KiwiSaver.<\/p>\n<p>This means that if your KiwiSaver investment grows, you pay a portion of that growth in tax. Likewise, if your investment declines the IRD will pay you a portion of the loss.<\/p>\n<p>KiwiSaver investments are managed funds called PIEs (Portfolio Investment Entities). Your KiwiSaver provider calculates this tax using the PIR which either you or the Inland Revenue have given them.<\/p>\n<p>Your KiwiSaver PIR is based on your income from the last two financial years including any PIE income.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to ensure your PIE has your correct PIR if your circumstances have changed, like if you have retired or taken leave from work. \u00a0Inland Revenue may identify that your PIR is incorrect, and they may contact your KiwiSaver PIE to update your PIR without notifying you.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>KiwiSaver Tax \u2013 Further Information<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Total taxable income could be from salary, wages, interest, investment dividends and any other income. You may need to seek tax advice to understand what your PIR should be and what incomes are used in determining it.<\/p>\n<p>One of the advantages of your KiwiSaver being managed by a PIE is that they have a top tax rate of 28% &#8211; so your usual income tax rate may be 39% but with PIE investments you automatically have a 5% discount on tax.<\/p>\n<p>The Inland Revenue has even more information on KiwiSaver tax, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ird.govt.nz\/roles\/portfolio-investment-entities\/using-prescribed-investor-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Why Should You Care?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your PIR is too high,\u00a0you might be paying too much tax \u2026 which you currently can\u2019t claim back.<\/li>\n<li>If your PIR is too low,\u00a0you may be faced with an unexpected tax bill from Inland Revenue.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your PIR tax rate is wrong, you need to <strong>change it before 31 March 2021<\/strong> so you\u2019re not overpaying or underpaying.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>When would my PIR charge?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Your KiwiSaver PIR is based on your income\/s over the last two tax years, and it charges at the following events, making it important to keep your PIR correct:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Withdrawal such as a first home or retirement withdrawal<\/li>\n<li>Making an investment fund change i.e. conservative to balanced<\/li>\n<li>End of the financial year 31\/3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PIE tax accrues\/builds up daily, so if it charges on one of the events, the accrued amount\/balance returns to $0.<\/p>\n<p>If your children have KiwiSaver, it may pay to also check their PIR tax rate.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>How to Find Your PIR Tax Rate?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first step to ensuring your PIR tax rate is correct is to find out what you\u2019re currently being charged.<\/p>\n<p>Your PIR is on your KiwiSaver statement but if you don\u2019t have access to your most recent statement you can find it through the Inland Revenue\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Log in to Inland Revenue\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/services.ird.govt.nz\/irsso\/login.jsp?bmctx=03C9FEB3B5F530568C6E02791E0ED43431B0ECA248EEDCEF976770434C8ED750&amp;password=secure_string&amp;contextType=external&amp;OverrideRetryLimit=0&amp;maintenance=false&amp;ssoCookie=Secure&amp;username=string&amp;challenge_url=https%3A%2F%2Fservices.ird.govt.nz%2Firsso%2Flogin.jsp&amp;request_id=4343967537398306369&amp;authn_try_count=0&amp;locale=en_US&amp;resource_url=https%253A%252F%252Fmyir.ird.govt.nz%252Feservices%252Fsecure%252F*\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">myIR<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Click on the <em>KiwiSaver member<\/em> link at the bottom right of the screen<\/li>\n<li>Click on <em>View Your PIR<\/em> at top right of screen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>How to Work Out Your PIR Tax Rate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you need, or want, to work out your PIR tax rate click on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ird.govt.nz\/roles\/portfolio-investment-entities\/using-prescribed-investor-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IRD link<\/a>. <br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>How to Change Your PIR Tax Rate With Your PIE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve worked out your PIR you should give it to your KiwiSaver provider (PIE fund).
